So here we are once again. It has been a very busy summer but also a very interesting one in terms of meeting new people, making new friends and learning things they don’t teach at university.

On the mean time uni has started again and judging by how my to do list long term and short term is looking like it is not going to be a boring year either.

Let me finally add I have found some old negatives from November (I think) which I am going to be showing first just to get them out of the way. With nothing else to say you’ll find this spots has got 217 photographs so if you need to go to the toilet do it now.

A portrait I was quite impressed to see actually. That’s the magic of film, you never know what you are going to get.

Back from Brazil the cat was quite happy to see us. Don’t look any further, it’s a cat. Quite expressless.

How fortunate am I! I live in a city where big questions are answered…not!

A rare sunny Sunday was spent at the park.

I have been taking the bus quite a lot to go to work this summer. It’s actually a great place for some shots.

On the way to meet Luca in Brixton. Their conversation had something to do with Pokemon and the Nintendo DS.

Glad to see people still read the news and not those useless twits in a tablet. I was loosing hope.

A quick stop at Starbucks and I was sorted caffeine-wise!

It turned out that the exibition at Photofusion displaied the same Vivian Mayer’s images I had already seen. Still it’s never bad to see them again.

Two ciders later shooting at strangers wasn’t such a problem. On top of that everyone was nicer and din’t seem to mind my camera.

A few days later having junk for lunch.

The shoebox size room was finally ready for our new flat mate to come. The new mattress needed some testing first though.

Lola lived with us for a few days only until she could find something more suitable for her needs.

Her arrival coincided with those London lootings. Luca and I went to Oxford Circus, where it seemed something was going to happen, instead we met Rony. Luca making us all jelous with his Leica.

So, the whole thing ended up in a chinese restaurant in Soho eating prawn crakers. It was that quite.

Next day, still looking for something to happen. Nothing did.

But it took longer than we first thought.

Went up north to Harrogate for a wedding. Heather checking everything was in order.

I first was not going to post this but I think it is quite a nice picture. Taken from the hotel window.

They covered as soon as I lifted my camera. I tried to explin what I was doing but I don’t think they understood me very well.

The next day, after 3 hours traveling back to London

straight to Notting Hill’s carnival. Unfortunately it was the end of it and people were heading home.

A few days later waiting to get the digitalized frames from Brazil from the hand of Luca.

He’s actually got an album and everything.

Eric played some of his songs for us. Maybe as a good bye before we caught a plane that same night to fly to Spain.

We mainly visited friends so almost no street pctures here. I felt completly unispired for some reason. Emma and Angel have started living together on an awesome big flat in Tarragona. The crisis has not harmed the ones who want to do something with their future in Spain actually.

Héctor. We actually spent all the time going from restaurant to restaurant and from terrace to terrace. It was a bit of a fat holiday to be honest.

I also met with one of my old maths teachers at school. He now is in the photography bussiness.

Last set of pictures on Brazil shot with the Minolta 7s rangefinder. It took longer than I thought to develop and scan the negatives. Partly becasue of my procrastination and partly beacuse of a busy summer. I have to thank Luca Farinelli for the offering of his scanner and the time he put in it.

Anyway here are the pictures.

Back at the beggining of the 1 month trip. At Heathrow Airport. Funny scenes at like 5 in the morning before grabbing a coffee. The bestthing was that there were no idiots complaining about getting their picture taken. As a sidenote I think it was not such a bad idea to buy some colour rolls and bring that analogue camera with me. The focussing patch is not very accurate and the way of working changes a lot from the digital SLR I normally use but I am generally happy with the result.

While most people seemed to sleep in groups, he was the only one alone. I supose the seats were too hard for him and his bag offered as much comfort as possible in such situation.

People were sleeping everywhere, even at the gate minutes before catching the plane.

In Porto we recieved our first Portugese lessons during the one hour wait to catch another plane, this time, to Rio. If you saw a very characteristic Portugese man alone in an airport, with no drink while the light that enteed through the airport windows reflected on the newspaper iluminating his face, wouldn’t you take a picture?

On the way to the gate. Nothing interesting happened during the flight. It was my first long distance flight which I spent watching movies and getting free drinks. What a luxury!

At the flat in Rio. By the way, this is Roy, Heather’s dad.

Having an interesting conversation.

Filipe. I took several pictures of him during that month in which, after taking his picture, he trid to see the image at the back of the camera. It was actually quite cute to see his reaction when explaining to him it was a analogue camera.

The weather was so nice in Rio I completly forgot it was winter. Filipe messing around before going to school.

This makes me wonder why multinational companies spend so much money on advertising campaigns if a single guy and some stickers can do a good job to attract customers.

After dropping Filipe off at school Heather and I went for a quick walk.

People in Brazil tend to carry their dogs, beacuse for what I have been told, the streets are too dirty. I actually saw dogs wearing little dog shoes which was quite funny. Another risk you run in Rio is getting serious burns when stepping on a manhole. Gas and electricity supplies run through the same pipe lines which causses explosions randomly or when walking on them. No one wants to take their dog for a walk and come back with just a lead…

In some streets the forest seems to swallow the city.

Last shot of the day at the beach. Not the best idea for “gringos” to go around Copacabana at night.

Next morning a self portrait to finish the roll. Not being able to see the pictures made me unsure of the results I was getting, so I wanted to develop the first roll in a local shop just to make sure.

Many mornings were spent in bars like this one to enjoy a coffee and little pastries called Salgados.

Going for another walk. This time towards Ipanema. I was actually glad to see this one in focus as I thought I missed it, but sad to see I framed so poorly.

We stumbled accross a Billabong surf competition.

I could have hung this picture on my wall, if this guy hadn’t have been sticking his ass out on the bottom right of the image. In the background Leblon and the favela of Chácara do Céu.

The entrance of every building had a fence, like the one in the image, for security reasons.

Next morning.

Something about firemen being arrested on the news. Nothing that matters for this blog anyway.

All my life I have thought that escalators eating shoes was a myth. Not in Brazil.

After a pillow fight.

Next day on the way to Centro. During that train ride I was told for maybe 5th or 6th time that I had to be careful with my camera. At the end of the day I paid 12 euros in a market for it. It would’t have been a great loss.

From Centro we caught a tram towards Santa Teresa. People were getting on it as we went along.

We had some nice lunch in a very nice cafeteria with a terrace, nearby.

We had some lovely coffee in a book shop/ cafeteria called Largo das Letras.

To hot to work I should imagine.

A cliché.

Lagoa is a big place but it’s not like you can get lost in it when there’s only one path to follow.

I don’t take great pleasure of photographing people’s miseries from the outside and rarely take pictures of homeless people. I realised he was, (or at least I think he is) homeless later on. Dignity goes first.

Obviously in love.

Looking for the “jumping in the water” cliché this time. I did not realise it was favella kids who surounded me as soon as they saw the camera. I still kind of like the picture, though.

If you are looking for a close up of a tanned ass with a thong you normally see in magazines and postcards about Brazil don’t go any further, that’s the closest think you are going to get.

Another meaningless picture!

Last one taken in Rio. After that we spent a week in Bonito and went straight to Iguabinha.

Cutting limbs and leaving to much headroom seems to be my signature lately. Amputated Adriana here.

I only took two shots with the Minolta during our stay in Iguabinha. So here we are back at Rio. More precisley in Jardim Botanico.

Juggeling with fruit for some money. Unfortunately this is the only picture I have of that scene. I would have liked to take more time for this shot but some dodgy people were staring at what I was doing and it did not feel very safe to carry on.

At Cristo. No, I did not take the typical picture of the statue partly beacuse I was busy with more important stuff to do up there Loved the afternoon light on the mountains in front of it, though.

Counting how many toursits get into a lift to get to the top can be a boring job. Going up the stairs and enjoy the view might be to much effort for some.

They obviously walked all the way up.

Family lunch the next day. Some can’t deal with so much delicious meet.

Our last night in Brazil was spent in a very cool bar where they played Salsa music and people danced in the street.

A funny coincidence in a shitty situation like that. I had my doubts on posting this.

Enough Salsa for the night.

Next day the Traveler was ready to depart for another month away from home.

And then we had to wait 6 hours to catch our flight which ended up being shit.

Black and White photographs from my trip to Brazil. I still haven’t figured out why the images seem to be a bit out of focus on the blog. Anyone knows why? By clicking on them you can appreciate the quality of them though.

I noticed I didn’t introduce anyone in the last entry so I have decided to add this image on the first place. The little serious fella is Aleixandre who’s beeing fed by his mother Paula. On the background, Felipe, the eldest son, and Heather who you already know from previous posts.

Felipe and my legs. While writing this post I just realized I have unexplicably lost some images I quite liked about the first days I spent with Heather’s family in their flat in Rio. You can imagine how pissed off I am.

During a birthday party. Aleixandre was the centre of attention. I wonder how it might feel as a kid to be photographed constantly. I never experienced such thing or at least I don’t remember it.

Back home after a long day for the kids.

Jump in time! Taking a van from Campo Grande’s airport to the town of Bonito.

We met some very friendly people like Ramón

and Claudia who couldn’t spend as many days with us as she would have liked. We were lost in the middle of Brazil but yes, there was still internet connection. A very slow and painful one…

We also met some not so nice people. It was the first time I felt ashamed of being catalan while beeing abroad.

The day of the spanish poisoned cocumbers which turned out to be german at the end. Great losses for spanish cocumber growers.

Bonito was a very chilled place without much to do during the day. Ramón used his time well.

We still woke up very ealry to do some eco-tourism activities though.

The bird started to loose balance off my head and you can imagine the result on my skull. Hurt for a whole day.

The thing on the bottom left of the image is not dust on the sensor but te tail of another dog that followed us during walks in the forest.

I did not become crazy submering my camera on the water. Rented a shitty compact with a waterproof case. Heather in Rio de Prata.

The story is long but making it short I only had a pair of contact lenses with me beacuse I never though I would go to a river to photograph before comming to Brazil. Unfortunately one broke which let me blind only beeing able to see through the compact camera’s LCD.

Shortly after that day in Rio de Prata we were getting ready to go back

and say goodbye to the friends we made during our stay. Gideon and

Some people were already doubting I even had some pictures of Brazil. To prove them wrong I am posting this entry. I am not that keen of colour photography at the moment. I find colour it distracting of the subject matter but I wanted to do an exception with Brazil as a way to challenge myself. Unfortunately this has not turned out as I imagined so I will start posting my favourite colour photographs about the trip. These shots are the digital ones as I am waiting to get the rolls developed. The black and ones though will probably come before the ones I shot in film as they are half way finished now. The order is also a bit messed up for the reason I just mentioned although each entry has sense in its own way.

This entry starts with pictures shot while going to a birthday party.

Their function was to stop drivers and promote the new flats beeing build in the area. I have never been to Los Angeles or any other city like that but it reminded me of it beacuse you need the car to go everywhere. Even to find a bakery. Even if beeing winter in Brazil the temperatures were quite high.

Except for when it rains the pool is used almost all year round.

One of the waitresses making herself pretty. The party was as expected so I won’t show any more in colour.

At Sao Paulo’s airport waiting for a connecting flight to Campo Grande, near Pantanal, a few days later.

Taking a bus to Campo Grande from the airport. The sign on the door says “Somos diferentes…” (we are different…).

I imagined a girl with red lipstick kissing the walls of a toilet and found it weird…

Back at the airport to get a transport to Bonito.

On the van. I actually shot a lot from cars, buses and vans. A trick that always works when the schedules are tight or mobility is not great.

I quite like that one.

It was great to be a bit far away from the cities for a change.

And do stuff like that. Simple but so much fun!

That aswell!

Some people also gave banana pieces to monkeys who know what tourists are like. This one, though, was greedy!

I don’t think she got the shot. These compact cameras are too slow for monkeys that fast.

After some amazing snorkeling in Rio de Prata.

I was here if you are too lazy to look for it in Google Maps.

There were some street shots (according to deffinitions) every once and a while but not very often.

I started shooting other stuff that felt like a waste of time at the time. I find them interesting now.

I also had time to walk around to get some shots here and there. Unfortunately, beeing a quite town and feeling like sunday afternoon everyday of the week I got quite frustrated at the beginning as I am used to the non stop activity of London.

People did not mind pictures taken although many were shy of the camera. Something shocking as you can get kind of used to getting bollocked by taking someone’s picture in London.

If my memory serves me right that was the Taxi station. Not very busy as you can see…

Right time, right place. Many other coloured cars could have passed but I got lucky.

What first caught my attention of that place was that there were no kids playing (it was too hot) but then I though I didn’t need the kids as there were marks of dirty balls hitting the white wall had left a trace. ( I should be a poet, really…).

I was so glad to see people in the streets after a while!

At night the town seem to burst with life.

I know these two last shots are very similar but both situations were worth snapping I think. I actually had to step into her house to get that photo… she didn’t seem to be bothered at all.

The REAL Caipirinhas can knock you out by only drinking a couple, I am telling you. I managed to snap this before loosing conscience. (maybe I exagerated a little…).

(It wasn’t dead I can assure you that).

Cute girl doing her homework in the street. I only had one chance to get the picture right and not look like a perv beacuse her parents were looking and I didn’t know how they would react. Later I explained them what I was doing. They didn’t seem to mind.

Composition is a guess with these shots. Nothing you can do about it really.

In the “Balneario”. The water was freezing but so refreshing in that heat.

We had some great food there aswell.

Some more shots from the van. This time on the way back to Campo Grande to, eventually, fly back to Rio de Janeiro.

Colour temperature is way off beacuse of the tainted glass I was shooting through.

They seemed from some kind of mafia or gang but probably that’s my stereotyped european imagination.

Only one day after arriving from Campo Grande we were getting into another car towards Iguaba for a week. Another deserted town where I got some family shots.

It has been a while since I did’t publish anything in the blog. The reason for it has been a one month trip to Brazil and the search for some meaningful jobs, internships or anything that can actually help me out stepping in the photography industry.

This entry will only feature a small colection of pictures (only 16) I took befeore going to Brazil and while I was still finishing my university essays. I have been trying to think how I will post all the Brazil pictures without boring people who follow the blog. A couple or three entries is what i have chosen to publish in the next weeks. Sorry for the delay and thanks for the kind comments I have been recieving until now even when not publishing anything.

On a side note I will stop puting titles to the entries. I don’t think there is much point for it and I am actually running out of ideas.

To the pictures now.

As I was saying these pictures are way too old. This is the day of the Royal Wedding and beacuse I am very smart I though I couldn spend the night watching movies while Heather was at work so forgive me for some pictures. I was in a complete zmbie state. The reason of this picture is beacuse I like those smiles and how the police man seems to be a member of the family aswell…

A squirel on a fence. Apparently they are quite nasty creatures.

On the train station, while waiting for Heather’s train to arrive, there was nothing better to do than go for a self-portrait.

Having breakfast at Starbucks.

Although it was expectable Buckingham Palace’s suroundings were crowded with people. We took ages to even get close to the Mall. After only beeing able to see the top of the Scotish Guard’s hats we decided to go to a pub where we could confortably sit and see everything while having a beer.

Last picture of that day in my Zombie-like state.

Later that week. Kids: this is called exploitation of a poor’s man situation and it is not right!

Finishing uni essays during a pause. Beeing “encarserated” at home makes me take this pictures…

I spent some days not sleeping beacuse I had to finish those essays so here are some more Zombie pictures… this was the day I finally handed them all in.

She was in this position for a while and thought it could work with the statues in the back. I am still not sure it does though.

The end for now. I am currently working on the Brazil pictures which I hope I won’t take to long to post.

I will spend the next month in Brazil visitng relatives and friends. That’s why I am posting these few pictures of the past days as I don’t want to accumulate too much material for the next one.

I am taking 10 rolls of Kodak Portra 160NC ( kindly recommended by Claire Atkinson) to shoot on my Minolta 7s during my trip and the DSLR which is also going to travel with me as back-up. I hope the next entries are going to be offering some nice material.

To the pictures now.

In a Sunday market. It always surprises me how many of these designers seem to not care if they sell or not. It might come with the pride of the profession…

Another weird thing is these sunday market photographers you always see walking around with their film cameras hanging of their necks. I have never seen any of them shooting in the streets from Monday to Saturday, only Sundays. At least this one took a picture. Or maybe pretended to… Some might argue I was with my camera there as well but I always try to take it with me everywhere.

She was giving flyers aways.

Old english women always look very tough. Only speaking with them you realize they are, maybe, the nicest people in this island.

Walking off the train. I have to admit autofocus did most of the work here. Hip shot.

These pictures were taken in a space of 10 or 15 minutes so you are right if you are thinking I was anxious to shoot.

At the doctors for vaccinations.

It was a total of three injections. A “cocktail” that let our arms sore for a week. Heather hates needles by the way.

I had to kind of run for this one. Of course the guy with the hat saw me take his friend’s picture so I said “Nice tatoo”. I think they though I was gay or something. As long as people don’t try to break my camera I am fine with whatever they want to think.

A truck driver on a break, but you can already see that.

Working on a website for a uni project. Héctor, who was not even going to be graded for this one, offered his help to create flash animations. He’s actually living in Germany and working through Skype can be a pain in the ass sometimes. That’s why he is pulling this face.

Easy to take “in the face” pictures when you know how to! It takes a while to figure out though!

I can’t decide whether it is a good picture or not. I don’t like how she’s smelling her finder although the whole on the wall full of cigarette ends kind of tell the story that is the cigarette break spot…

Excuse this terrible entry title. It is essays time at university. The final effort before spending a month in Brazil. The following pictures have been taken during the last week mostly at home while taking breaks so don’t expect to many good photographs.

I first didn’t know what I liked about that scene. Editing it I realized it was their bold heads and their glasses… I think it is a good example of how people can look similar but very different at the same time.

Not much to say. Just a few pictures taken during this last week and a half. We have moved to a new house closer to the center of London. Sharing again.

We got a couple of sunny days.

But the rain came back.

Planes, trains and ferries

It has been a couple of busy weeks for me. The cat’s been staying at my parents back in Spain during six months as the regulation to take pets in the UK is very strict. The six months had gone and it was time to take her to her real home. Booking all of the tickets and manage to get a cheap enough deal was an arduous job considering I could not fly in the UK wit the cat. So a two hour flight became a two day journey.

Before all of that though some pictures of the previous days.

I went to pick my new purchase at the end of the world. A 24mm 2.8 Nikon. DHL didn’t manage to find me home when they wanted to deliver the lens so I went to their office.

Public transport is not that great when you are in the outskirts of London. I had an hour in a half to try the new lens in that bus stop while waiting for the next bus.

And go abstract.

Or just be nosy.

I am pretty happy with the lens until now. Weight is very important when carrying the camera the whole day round.

Appearing very often lately. :)

Twice in an entry is just vanity.

Flying to Paris.

There are a lot of gaps from here since I had to carry the box containing the cat in it. There are less things more exhausting that carrying 5 kilos around during two days. I supose that’s the moment I caught some sicknes since I felt like sneezing. Damn air conditioning!

Gare du Nord. They had those funny heating lamps and almost each one of them had homless people close by. Something you don’t see in London. Homeless people I mean. It was kind of shocking after not seeing them in the streets.

Quick walk around Gare du Nord. I wish that man on the right would have been in focus.

Waiting for the shuttle bus to the ferri. We were not successful beacuse the cat’s passport was not regulated as they wanted it. I had to pay 80 euros to an urgency vet on a sunday and wait 24 hours to try and cross the english channel again.

Feeling terrible from a weird flu and a headache.

Still went out to see how Calais looked like.

After the third McDonald’s meal in two days took this one for the sake of showing the Bed & Breakfast.

I was not expecting a boat with so much to do in it though.

Most people didn’t use the gamble machines or the restaurants and shops.

After a last train from Dover to London and a bit more walking we arived home
